Ligue 1 2025/26 — Analysis of French Football and a Betting Strategy

Ligue 1 — a League of Contrasts

France's Ligue 1 is a league of contrasts: the vast gap between PSG and the rest creates a unique betting dynamic. The average total of 2.5-2.7 is normal, but the spread is extreme: PSG home games run 3.5+, while mid-table clashes often go Under 2.0.

For a Poisson model, this polarisation is an advantage. When two defensive lower-half sides meet, the model consistently shows Under 2.5 with a high edge. Books anchor to the league average (2.6), but a specific match may have an expected total of 1.8 — creating a value bet.

PSG — a Separate Universe

The Paris club dominate so completely that home games against the lower half are an almost guaranteed Over 2.5 with a total of 3.5-4.0. But the odds reflect it (Over 2.5 often 1.25-1.35), so value is hard to find. More interesting are PSG away games: on the road they play a controlling game with a total of 2.3-2.5, and the model sometimes finds edge on Under.

Marseille and Monaco are the second tier. Marseille under De Zerbi play attacking football with high home xG (1.8-2.2). Monaco are reliably high-scoring — their games often go Over 2.5. Lille, Lens and Nice are solid mid-table sides with a predictable style, ideal for modelling.

The Middle and Bottom — Value Territory

Fifteen of eighteen teams (bar PSG, Monaco, Marseille) play similarly: a compact defence, counter-attacks, a low total. That makes the model accurate for this segment. Under 2.5 in mid-table matches is a steady source of value. Rennes, Strasbourg, Nantes and Toulouse have home totals of 2.0-2.3; their away games are lower still, 1.5-1.8.

Saint-Étienne, back in Ligue 1, play as cautiously as possible — an ideal Under candidate. Auxerre and Angers are similar, their games rarely seeing more than two goals.

BTTS in Ligue 1

The BTTS rate in Ligue 1 is around 50% — average. But in PSG home games BTTS happens 60%+ of the time (PSG always score, the opponent occasionally replies). In lower-half matches BTTS drops to 35-40% — weak attacks can't break organised defences.

A Strategy for Ligue 1

BETSKOP focuses on Under 2.5 in matches without the top three, BTTS No with a clear favourite, and Over 2.5 only in PSG/Marseille home games at a sufficient price. All predictions are on the analysis pages and in the Telegram channel. Results are open. Stakes via the Kelly Criterion.
